Ever wonder where adult film stars come from?

British blogger Jon Millward studied the backgrounds and other statistics of 7,000 women and 3,000 men acting in the adult film industry, using information from the Internet Adult Database.

Most stars report being natives of California, Texas or Florida. But Virginia is near the top third of porn-star birthplaces, ranking 17th in the country.

"Searching my sample of 10,000," Millward says, "I can find 52 women who were born or raised in Virginia. None of them seem to be particularly well known." He acknowledges that the information in the database is self-reported and unverified.

Why California? Well, that's kind of obvious. "Being born in the right place, where the work is, makes it easier for Cali girls to join the business — it's right on their doorstep," Millward responds. Some porn actors also inaccurately list their birthplaces as California, he adds.

Perhaps Virginia's most famous porn princess is Seka. Also known as Dorothea "Dottie" H. Patton, the 58-year-old was born in Radford and grew up in Hopewell, just south of Richmond. She was chosen Miss Hopewell High School before moving to the West Coast and becoming an adult film star in the 1970s. Now retired, Seka was an early inductee into the X-Rated Critics Organization Hall of Fame.

Other tidbits: Most female adult stars are white and have brown hair, and playing teenagers is the most frequent role. Their most popular stage name is "Vicki Lee." For men, it's "David."
