Virginia Coalition at Capital Ale House

Having spent the past 10 years establishing its musical identity on the energetic performances of roots-infused rock, Virginia Coalition, now a trio, took a stylistic side-step last year with the release of its fifth studio record, “Home This Year.” Relying less on rapid-fire rhythms and riff-driven grooves, the band took a more structural approach to its new compositions, delivering 10 tracks of solid songwriting and well-crafted melodies. While the band may have caused an inadvertent division in its fan base, you can catch Virginia Coalition's new direction at Capital Ale House on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 9 p.m. $15. 780-2537. — Mike Hilleary
