Re: “Deejay Gray, 25

I never ever comment on these things, preferring to (as our theatre's stated motto says) "keep our drama ON stage", but for this I feel compelled to say something. First... have any of you noticed that with all the other nominees there are either no comments made or between one and five, all nice ones? Yet for this, there are over 25, with negative comments being spewed. Really? Who thought this was the place for such a thing? Adults should know better.

This is an article honoring some wonderful contributers to the Richmond community, and Mr. Gray is one of them. This article highlights his contributions as an artistic director/producer, actor, and director, all of which he has shown to be quite good at, not only with his own company, but when performing with, collaborating with, or otherwise working with other companies. To use this as a forum for your own personal or professional grievances, real or imagined, is beyond the pale.

Some above have used passive aggressive verbiage to laud Mr. Gray, then point out shortcomings, slights, or in particular, marginalize him based on the fact he is "young and still learning". Please! He is a grown 25 year old man who has accomplished much in this artistic community, and quite frankly I have encountered many older adults who do not have the maturity, focus, determination or raw creative talent that Mr. Gray has, and have seen many a theatre company fold while being helmed by those much older as well.

As for what is done or not done on social media and how it impacts perceptions... I dare say that if all artists in a theatre community, here or in other cities, were judged on their personal lives off stage, and patronage depended on it, not many seats would be filled.

Mr. Gray is directing right now on a project for our theatre, and so far dealings with him have been professional and exciting. He is working with some of the most respected adult actors in this town. I daresay I would not have put my trust in his hands had I not researched him thoroughly.

For anyone else who feels the need to be nasty on this thread, consider that if you have something to say to this man, perhaps saying it in private would serve all a bit better. To have taken, what should have been a proud moment for him, away in this manner, is petty. Again, this is NOT the place or the article.
