Join the annual lecture series. September will feature Craig Reynolds, the curator at the Virginia State Capitol. There’s little doubt that Thomas Jefferson devoted his life to building the nation and propagating a lasting American identity. Through patronage of the arts and architecture, Jefferson hoped to establish new American models and cultivate artistic taste among his fellow citizens. Yet, little attention has been given to Jefferson’s use of diplomatic privilege, political authority and even his bully pulpit in instituting dramatic and widespread cultural and artistic changes. This talk explores how and why Jefferson often used his various seats of political power.
