The Opening Ceremonies

What: The nine-day cycling event launches with some pomp and circumstance. Among the officials and dignitaries scheduled to attend are the governor and mayor. Expect a parade of flags, the entrance of Team USA led by the Richmond Cycling Corps, the national anthem sung by “American Idol” finalist Rayvon Owen and a free concert from the Richmond Symphony.

When: Friday, Sept. 18, 6:30-8 p.m.

Where: Brown’s Island

To Go: Gates open at 5:30 p.m. The event is free, but tickets must be claimed online. Visit Eventbrite.com and search for “UCI Road World Championships Opening Ceremony.”

Where to Park: Decks include the Federal Reserve parking deck at Fifth and Byrd streets; the Shockoe Slip deck at 12th and Canal streets; the RMA Parking Deck at Canal between Ninth and 10th streets; the surface lots at Third and Fourth and Cary streets, and at Fifth and Sixth and Canal streets.

What You Can Bring: Lawn chairs, blankets, one sealed bottle of water per person. Money for food and drink vendors, including beer and wine, who are onsite.

What You Can’t Bring: Pets, large backpacks, coolers, outside food or drinks, alcohol, glass bottles or containers, contraband, laser pointers, bikes, skateboards, inline skates, flying objects.
