The Lotus Club Market and Tanglewood Ordinary

Tastemakers is always looking for something different, and we couldn't help but notice that The Lotus Club Market recently popped up on the strip of Cary Street next to VCU. Owner Jillian Gliatto opened The Lotus Club on Jan. 1 right next to 821 Bakery Café. With the Bakery closed during The Lotus Club's first few weeks of business, the new coffee shop hasn't had any problem filling its couches and tables with customers looking for hot java, bagels, homemade soups and relief from blustery January days. No, it's not the biggest on the block. But The Lotus Club has a lot of personality, with carefully chosen thrift-store furnishings, specials written with lipstick on mirrors and walls jammed full of original art. The Lotus Club is open seven days a week, 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. 819 W. Cary St. 775-6887. Hungry for home cooking away from home? Tanglewood Ordinary recently re-opened on Patterson Avenue, about 16 miles west of the Village Shopping Center. Be aware that Tanglewood Ordinary is a family-style restaurant. If you're not familiar with the term, think Sunday dinner at grandma's house, or think full-service Golden Corral. On their rotating menu, you're likely to find plenty of meat and potatoes, plenty of chicken and ham, plenty of buttery peas and carrots — all the stuff that glazes the eye, sticks you to your chair and makes you feel like you may never get up again. We'll see you there. Tanglewood Ordinary is open Thursday through Saturday, 5-9 p.m., and Sunday, noon-7 p.m. 2210 River Road West.
