The End of an Era of Questionable Names

Roots Music Spectacular at Canal Club.

Just as the Baby New Year of 2009 will be kicking Old Man '08 toward the door, Richmond's twisted bluegrass band, Special Ed and the Shortbus (pictured), will experience its own kind of transition. The band plays its last show for the Roots Music New Year's Eve Spectacular at the Canal Club. After seven years of performing, the band has decided to retire its title and become the Hot Seats, which it considers to be a “more widely palatable alternative.” The band is joined by roots stalwarts Jackass Flats, the melodic singin' and box-playin' of A Good Natured Riot, and West Virginia fiddle-rockers Fox Hunt, starting at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31. Look at it this way — more banjos per capita than Carytown. $15-$20. 643-CLUB. — Mike Hilleary
