The Blow

The Blow is one band that doesn’t blow. The electro-pop group from Olympia, Washington, blows most bands out of the water. Silly wordplay aside, the duo consists of keyboardist Khaela Maricich and Melissa Dyne on a scientist’s rig of modular synthesizers and sampling hardware, making playfully seductive music. Buoyant and bouncy, tunes from their 2013 self-titled release on K Records come across like a less-arty Tune-Yards exploration of indie sweetness. There are hints of Laurie Anderson minimalism and the elemental electronic starkness of Suicide at play, but Maricich and Dyne take those once-underground influences and make them pleasingly palatable to mainstream sensibilities. The Blow brings its captivating charms to Strange Matter on Thursday, Dec. 11, with opening sets by Nelly Kate, Nu Depth and Merrin Karas. Doors open at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10-$13. strangematterrva.com.
