Downtown Richmond gets all lit up on holiday cheer for the 30th annual Grand Illumination, one of the city’s favorite ways to congregate around a gargantuan Christmas tree, accompanying radiant reindeer and high-rises strung with thousands of lights. Entertainment includes the Kings of Swing, Virginia Repertory Theatre’s cast of “Mame,” the Greater Richmond Children’s Choir, the American Youth Harp Ensemble, Snow Bear, the VCU Trombone Choir and the Coventry Handbells from Bon Air Baptist Church. Don’t be late — the teeming masses will be there in abundance. The switch for the Grand Illumination at the James Center gets turned on Friday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. Free. 344-3232. thejamescenter.com.
