Re: “Bands Urged to Boycott Dominion Riverrock

Fact1: Dominion is dumping toxic coal ash waste water into Va rivers. The Southern Environmental Law Center & Potomac Riverkeeper Network report that aerial photos taken June 2015 revealed the unexpected draining of coal ash waste water from "Pond E" at Dominion Power's Possum Point Power Plant into Quantico Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River. Dominion's own records indicate the coal ash waste water in Pond E was contaminated with cadmium & other toxic metals & had been leaking into groundwater over 3 decades without any action by the Va Department of Environmental Quality or Dominion.

SELC asked David Paylor, director of Va's DEQ to explain the empty pond. His response in an e-mail- "we know water was moved between ponds but our best information is that no water was discharged to state waters."

In Jan 2016, SELC & Potomac Riverkeeper Network uncovered a consultant report indicating otherwise. The report referenced in part "surface water stored in Pond E was discharged into Quantico Creek in May, 2015.

Both SELC & Potomac Riverkeeper Network asked Dominion & the DEQ how much coal ash waste water Dominion discharged into Quantico Creek. They received no answer from Dominion or the DEQ. The answer came on Feb 9, 2016 when a story in Inside NoVa revealed the discharge was 34 million gallons. The info in the story was attributed to Dominion Power officials.

Per SELC, a discharge that large would be close to the volume of waste water released during the disastrous 2014 Dan River spill @ a Duke Energy facility in N Carolina, just south of the Va border.

Senior Attorney Grey Buppet of SELC said: "The dumping of waste water from Pond E is another chapter in a decades- long story of neglect & mismanagement of toxic coal ash ponds @ Possum Point. It is time that the DEQ insist on a responsible solution for this industrial waste that keeps it out of Va rivers".

This is why 700 people from all over Va marched on the State Capital in Richmond yesterday demanding Dominion stop dumping toxic coal ash waste water in our rivers & end it's plan to frack in Va & build a dangerous pipeline across our state. We are calling for the resignation of DEQ's director Paylor.

When government agencies fail to protect us & our environment and powerful corporation's like Dominion freely poison our groundwater, creeks & rivers, we must act.

Dominion is a powerful corporation, driven by profit. It's money through sponsorship of more & more public events & places (the Va museum of Fine Arts jazz cafe is now the Dominion Jazz Cafe) are business deals from Dominion's perspective & PR. Dominion can afford to buy the town, our government officials many times over. But we, the people, cannot afford Dominion.
