A Toast to Richmond

This was the scene: Dirtwoman asking Joe Morrissey for support in her mayoral race. Councilwoman Reva Trammell trading notes with City Auditor Umesh Dalal. CBS 6's Cheryl Miller eating cake with TV Jerry. The School Board's Carol Wolf bending the ear of Gov. Tim Kaine.

And that's not to mention the 500-some other musicians, artists, politicos, business leaders, media colleagues and former staff who shared laughs while helping Style Weekly toast the Richmond community on the occasion of its 25th anniversary.

The party, held at Toad's Place Richmond Oct. 30, included performances by Bart Chucker and friends, blues group The Bush League and young rockers Duchess of York, as well as a cheer from the performance-art group The Art Cheerleaders.

Style Weekly founder Lorna Wyckoff, who launched the magazine in November 1982, was on hand to see Delegate Jennifer McClellan present a resolution to Style from the General Assembly. In a surprise visit, Gov. Kaine -- a Style reader for more than 20 years -- commended the magazine for shedding light on important issues while having fun along the way.

The celebration, on the heels of Style's Anniversary Issue Oct. 24, reflected that same spirit.
