Style “Invisible” at Chesterfield Meetings

Reporters Scott Bass and Chris Dovi incorrectly reported that “a Style reporter was the lone media representative at a [Chesterfield] school board meeting toward the end of the last school year” (“Pulp Future,” Cover Story, Sept. 16). The Chesterfield Observer newspaper attends School Board meetings as does the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Since reporters from Style Weekly hardly ever attend those school board meetings, or any other Chesterfield meetings for that matter, these writers didn't know that reporters usually sit next to the speaker podium and not in the designated space at the rear of the meeting room. The irony is amusing.

When I asked one Chesterfield school official if he knew who your reporter was, he said, “I didn't know Style attended our meetings.” A county government official — who also didn't want his name to appear in this letter — called Style “invisible” when it comes to attending county meetings.

I would urge you to attend and report on meetings of the School Board, Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission in Chesterfield because it benefits the public to have multiple sources of news. Moreover, Style has been certified by the Chesterfield Circuit Court to publish legal notices in the county so as an official news source for the county, you should want to live up to the commitment by attending meetings.

In your repeated reporting of the downsizing of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, shouldn't you also tell your readership (like we have) how today's economy is affecting your publication?
