Re: “Go Richmond! Mayor Touts Tier-One Sports

There is a very small set of powerful proponents for this Shockoe Stadium, and they keep bringing it up every 4 years. The smoke screen is always the same, and it's a bad deal. First, they keep saying that there's plenty of parking - fact is the decks are state decks, and by law can't be open to private parking. Second they say "it will pay for itself - fact is that it can't, but the deficit will be provided by #1 taking about 15 or so blocks of downtown off the tax rolls for 30 years (ie the tax base gets taken away), and #2 City guarantees of the debt (ruinous). Third, they say that all kinds of new businesses and skyscrapers will result - fact is that none of that will happen, because if there were any demand for that it would have happened; the ballpark is just a watercolor schematic and nothing more.

The only thing new about this one will be some crazy math whereby the City and the proponents will try to "count" Boulevard retail as covering the losses on Shockoe (the way the City finessed counting Bon Secours construction to cover huge losses on the Redskins deal).

The bottom line is that a small group of the usual people will get paid huge amounts of consulting fees and outright payoffs. The City will have a long term crippling bad financial burden left to it after this Mayor is gone. And the Counties will get to save their contributions to a reasonable ballpark and continue being managed well. And so it goes until the fools running the City are sent packing.

Re: “City Pays for Mayor’s Luxury Big Apple Stay

Houseman, really? When Chief Norwood was interviewing in Raleigh it was noted that the size of the police force there is about the same as Richmond's but they have twice the population. Richmond is so crazily loaded with lard ... sooner or later someone will actually manage that government and do some things. It's just one huge jobs program, not a well run government. And come on ... let's be real here ... if you're going to NYC to pick up an award, do you really need to spend TWO nights? Believe it or not, there is daily transportation to and from NYC. "We couldn't find a room" and basically were "forced" into taking the super-luxe deal? Oh that's right, West Palm condo is where the "Richmond Storm Readiness Center" is located too. Everybody knows the deal here in River City. Tier One! ha ha.

That Richmond even has a press secretary is all you need to know about how much waste is just assumed in the City. That said, she really is pretty funny. Every time the City gets busted for bad judgment (often, even normal), you get these statements from her. Remember the "we don't have to get a building permit for a skate rink"? This one is classic, though. She's just shooting from the hip, making stuff up as usual. And that's the "official voice" of the Mayor's office. smh

Re: “Hooray! Trains, Trains for All! (Except Richmond)

The state should move the science museum and reopen Broad Street Station for passenger rail. That's the bottom line.
