Re: “Exile on Grace Street

The article and subsequent comments sure bring back memories of what it was like in the 70's and 80's. I came to Richmond for college, at the U of R, in 1974. Grace Street was a marvel to this CT suburbanite. So much to see, eat, hear and do. In 1975 I discovered the Biograph, The left side of the theatre was generally for art films and the right side was usually the adult fare. Sometimes the cries and moans of the XXX actors could be heard in quite moments of Renoir, Truffaut, and other great films. For some reason Bergman's Magic Flute was on the right side. Tapping one's foot to the music was challenging as every now and then your shoe got stuck. I didn't think about what was on the floor. My one and only viewing of a Burlesque show was at the Lee Art. Tiny moldy feather costumes on women who would have best been called matrons.

Re: “Publix Is Buying Martin's

Ukrops was Richmond's best grocery store in the 1980's. Unfortunately they never kept up with the times and it remained a 1980's chain in the 21st century. In later years, maintenance was deferred, cleanliness and service standards declined as the chain slowly died of exhaustion. Martin's [Ahold] purchase of the chain was not followed with any significant upgrades or changes in service standards, both of which continued to decline. Martin's did nothing to keep themselves fresh, new, and exciting. The willingness to sell the chain reflects the listlessness of its performance. Now, Forest Hills area becomes a food desert, 100s of good workers are displaced. Publix cherry picked the winners from the losers and those stores will be spotless, well stocked, brightly lit, pleasant environment, outstanding sandwiches, and an all around wonderful place to shop, like Ukrops could have been if the management hadn't been mired in the 80's. One has to work harder to stay on top.
