The Other Black Meat

Where else in Richmond are you finding Texas caviar on the menu? That's a black bean and black-eyed pea dish, marinated in hotness, best served with a cold one and a plate loaded with wood-fired meats. It's what Paul Hubbard and Chris Davis are serving at their new take-out business, Alamo Barbecue, 2202 Jefferson Ave. in Church Hill.

Vegetarians find something to love in the barbecue portobello sandwich and the 10 daily sides such as corn bread, cowboy beans and jalapeno mac and cheese. Diehards will appreciate Davis' no-propane cooking methods, learned from Texas pitmasters, for smoked ribs, pulled pork and chicken, and beef brisket. Open daily, 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. for takeout only. 592-3138.

Weezie's Kitchen: One of the city's workingest cafes is open from 8 a.m. until 2 a.m. daily, serving moderately priced, fresh comfort foods in a welcoming atmosphere, breakfast through bar crowd. Cary St. 358-4501. www.bin22carytown.com.
