This Week: Dough Equals Doh!


If the Five Guys burger chain has taught us anything, it's that success leads to imitation. In this case, the company name is what's being flattered. Two Guys Pizza (no connection to the burger place) has opened in Short Pump next to Regal Cinema, bringing the number of new pie joints in town to at least five with the end nowhere in sight. Pizza profit margins are usually good, demand seems to be surging, and aficionados spend hours musing over the seemingly infinite variations.

Two Guys is the collaboration of a couple of former Brooklyners, Phil Blaschick and Jim Farruggio, who found each other in Richmond; they opened the new business last month.  They're serving classic New York-style thin crust, deep dish and Sicilian pies with all the toppings. A take-and-bake version is available, and the cheery eat-in area seats 60. Open daily at 11636 W. Broad St. 360-3720.  

More food do-gooders:
Philanthropy by Design holds a summer beer tasting with proceeds benefiting Tricycle Gardens. The event includes specialty beers, four courses of heavy appetizers and a dessert, for $30. The tasting will be held Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. at the downtown Capital Ale House. See tricyclegardens.org for details.

“Unite for a Bite,” a national fundraiser, comes to Savor on Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. Chefs will raise money for a scholarship for Women Chefs and Restaurateurs and for the Gulf Coast recovery fund. A summery five-course menu begins with okra beignets and ends with chocolate truffles and New Orleans coffee; wine pairings are available. See savorcompany.com for details.

Both locations of the Boathouse continue their watershed specials menu, giving a percentage of sales to Friends of the James River Park and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. boathouserichmond.com.

Icing Carytown: Cupcake giveaways, an art contest, prizes and other celebratory acts come to Babycakes Bakery for its grand opening party Aug. 21 from noon till 5 p.m. The business at 3324-B W. Cary St. touts the motto, “Simple decadence for the soul,” with scratch-made and hand-frosted cupcakes in 19 flavors. babycakesva.com.

Taste and listen: Music lovers have long known about the quality acts on stage at Ashland Coffee and Tea, one of the area's most respectful listening rooms. Now the trackside business is a Sunday brunch destination as well, with Andrew McEvoy playing classical guitar, a changing menu that includes design-your-own omelets and waffles, with mimosas and bubbly from the bar. One and running: The Belvidere at Broad celebrates its first anniversary with a party open to the public Aug. 29 at 5 p.m. Singer and sax man Roger Carroll and guitarist Alan Parker will provide the music, and the restaurant's small plates — tuna tartare, grilled tenderloin, natural beef sliders, shrimp parfaits, crab cake bites, caprese salad, roasted stuffed mushrooms and other favorites — will be priced $5 to $9. A portion of proceeds benefits Henrico Court Appointed Special Advocates, and $5 raffle tickets for prize packages also support the organization.

The Belvidere's menu is one of the city's strongest for gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options, and its bar has a fervent neighborhood following. 506 W. Broad St. 344-0644. thebelvidere.com.
