Set List

Where to go, What to hear.

Chuck Brown at Fridays at Sunset

Since the '60s, the Godfather of Go-Go has been working on a sound that keeps people from leaving the dance floor. He blends Latin rhythms and soul, requires a lot of audience participation and never gives his drummer a moment's rest. All in the service of a sound he calls go-go, and that can be heard working the crowd up at Kanawha Plaza June 9 at 6:30 p.m. $20. Call (800) 594-TIXX or visit www.fridaysatsunset.com.

Richmond Jazz Society at the Canal Club

The local jazz element turns out to celebrate the music of a music legend. Samson Trinh leads the 17-piece Upper East Side Big Band in "A Salute to the Music of Ray Charles" (must be that movie that made him so popular), with crooner and piano-tickler Adrian Duke, Tuesday, June 13, at 7 p.m. $5-$8. 643-2582.

Posin at Alley Katz

So they call themselves the "number one officially recognized touring Poison tribute act," which of course begs the question: Is there a better Poison tribute act that doesn't tour? But they've been on "The Surreal Life," which in the sideshow of pop culture is like a gold record, at least. They play Alley Katz Friday, June 9, 9 p.m.-2 a.m. $10. 643-2816.

Murk One CD Release at Gallery5

The hip-hop underground surges to the surface Saturday, June 10, for the release of resident wordsmith Murk One's debut EP, "tricycle." Richmond label Concice Records also brings in Swordplay, Martinnealreamy, Divine Profitz and Micsource, starting at 8 p.m. $5. 644-0005.

Cowboy Mouth at Friday Cheers

When drummers sing, something always seems to break loose in the architecture of the band, creating a sound that is much more … untamed. Think Animal in "The Muppet Show." Fred Le Blanc has the same sort of effect on the New Orleans rock of Cowboy Mouth, a wild sort of sound that runs away with itself. They play Brown's Island June 9 with Rainmarket at 6:30 p.m. Free. Call 788-6466 or visit www.citycelebrations.org.
