Underoath at Alley Katz

Really, screamo Christian rock could go either way. But if Christian death metal can make it, giving praise in an unintelligible roar, it's reasonable to assume that Underoath, who descends from jagged guitar squalls now and then into something fairly well behaved, has a pretty good chance at it. They play with Poison the Well, As Cities Burn and Spitfire, May 4 and 5, 6-10 p.m. $15-$17. 643-2816.

Wiseacre at Shenanigans

The local twangers of Wiseacre know the best place around for crying into a beer, and they're not afraid to talk about regret over those lonesome guitar chords. Right when you think she's never coming back, Wiseacre jumps into the kind of slurry festivity common in a turn-of-the-century beer hall. You'll move the feet, feel a little better and fool yourself into thinking she might come back after all. Sorry, buddy. Wiseacre plays with Austin singer-songwriter Ghostwriter and Sangre De Toro, Thursday, May 4, at 8 p.m. $5. 264-5010.

Local Jazz Pioneers at The Matrixx Room

The Richmond Jazz Society honors the songbirds, dancers, club owners and assorted brass fixtures that have made Richmond's jazz scene, years later, so fruitful. Consider this a way to catch up on what you missed, a way to, you know, get it, man. The show is Tuesday, May 9, at 7 p.m. $5-$8. 643-1972.

Hardknockers Rock-N-Cruise in the Bottom

Custom-car club the Hardknockers bring polish and big blocks to Shockoe Bottom Saturday, May 6, noon-4 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony and then … many bands! At McCormack's Irish Pub, there's The Misled, Rev. D-Ray and the Shockers, The Strap-Ons and The Bottle Babies. At Wonderland, it's The Drop Tops, Wrenn Mangum, The Malamondos, The Marauders and The Deviltones, all starting at 6 p.m. Admission to the cruise-in is $5. Admission to both shows is $12. 648-1003.
