The Lee Boys at Friday Cheers

Sacred steel has all the appeal of the blues with none of the guilt. No cheatin', no drinkin', no sinnin' — because it's gospel, after all, led by the fine wail of the pedal-steel. The Lee Boys have brought it up from Florida, a place definitely in need of some salvation. When you're listening to the inspired jams and the arena-sized sound, it becomes obvious that this is a band that got started in a church where dancing was encouraged, where the hymns weren't the painful dirges of other, less steely houses of worship. The Lee Boys play Brown's Island Friday, May 18, with DJ Williams Projekt, 6:30-9:30 p.m. Free. Call 788-6466 or visit www.venturerichmond.com.

Tulsa Drone at Hyperlink Café

If you were to freeze Ennio Morricone (the composer responsible for, among other musical highlights, giving the myth of the West a soundtrack in the Clint Eastwood outlaw movies) and thaw him out again in the near, possibly post-apocalyptic future, the music he came up with might sound a lot like Richmond's Tulsa Drone. Meditative, wordless, lost out on some great musical plane, Tulsa Drone has put the future sounds of the Old West on a second album, "Songs From a Mean Season," which it will deliver Thursday, May 17, at 8 p.m. 254-1942.

Visit Tulsa Drone online.

Drew Gibson at Stretchin'

Barksdale at Willow Lawn is host to another in its singer-songwriter series with Drew Gibson, BJ Kocen and Jackie Frost. Gibson seems to walk a fine line: A few more packs of Marlboro Reds, and he'll be down in the gravel with Tom Waits; a half-octave higher and a little more piano, and you have something that pops like Ben Folds. Listen to him sing his balancing act Sunday, May 20, 6-8 p.m. $5. 282-2620.

Elliott Yamin at Innsbrook

"American Idol" must be like the Mafia: You think you're out, they pull you back in. Yamin was called up to play an episode of the show, new teeth and hair and all, so his show at Innsbrook has moved to Friday, May 18, after he gets finished doing his "favor" for the "network." You know? You know? Doors at 6 p.m. $10-$15. Call 423-6589 or visit www.innsbrookafterhours.com.
