Set List

Where to go. What to hear.

Two nights of reggae at Alley Katz

The D.C.-based five-piece Soldiers of Jah Army are making themselves known all along the East Coast and down to Puerto Rico. They appear regularly with reggae staples The Wailers, Toots and the Maytals and Eek-a-Mouse, promoting morality and spirituality without irony. Their roots sound is four albums deep and getting deeper at Alley Katz Thursday, Nov. 4, at 9 p.m. Richmond Dub Collective opens. Tickets are $7-$10.

Can't git enough reggae, mon? Gwan back to Alley Katz on Sunday, Nov. 7, for Third World. Touring for more then 30 years, they've made it big with the pop hit "Now That We Found Love" in 1988. Formed in 1973 by two Jamaican music students, Michael "Ibo" Cooper and Steven "Cat" Coore, and former members of Inner Circle, Third World rose up with a mix of roots reggae, rock, funk and rap. See the veterans with a sense of purpose at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20, www.alleykatzrva.com.

Krystian Zimerman at Camp Concert Hall

The Polish piano virtuoso is as well-known for the infrequency of his performances as for the skill he brings to them. His artistic moves are careful and well-planned, and this latest flurry of touring was inspired by the 150th anniversary of Chopin's death. Zimerman's playing polarizes people, who either love or hate his interpretations of the master. His performance on Monday, Nov. 8 — his first in Richmond — will certainly cause a stir. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15-$30. 289-8980.

Angie Stone and Anthony Hamilton at the Carpenter Center

The Silk and Sandpaper Tour comes to the Carpenter Center Saturday, Nov. 6. R&B rising star Anthony Hamilton opens for singer-songwriter-keyboardist Angie Stone, and we get to guess which is silk and which is sandpaper at 7 p.m. Tickets are $47, available through www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 262-8100.
