Set List: Where to go. What to hear.

Amelia White at Ashland Coffee & Tea

Another Nashvillian coming to take over our town, White has that country polish that Tennessee puts on an artist. She sings her songs like folk tunes, though, like those protest songs of yore, and the music carries itself along very deliberately, so no words get away from you. White plays Ashland Thursday, Aug. 3, at 8 p.m. $10. 798-1702.

Will Hoge at Alley Katz

Nashville's Hoge has a voice like a barroom brawl — it's whiskey-burned and liable to get carried away on the rambling songs, which might go from slurry blues to big arena rock to something that really belongs in a smoky bar. His latest album, "The Man Who Killed Love," is built of the full-throated frustration with love. The kind of thing that often leads to bar fights. Will Hoge plays Friday, Aug. 4, with Sin City Revival, 9 p.m.-2 a.m. $10. 643-2816.

Walter Bell and The Latin Jazz Unit at Canal Club

Remember your joy at learning to play "Stairway to Heaven" on that first guitar? Imagine choosing to teach yourself the flute, or rather all the flutes out there — bass on up to piccolo. The Richmond Jazz Society gives our own Bell the chance to show how far he can take the flute — beyond jazz and into blues, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban sounds. Bell and The Latin Jazz Unit play a show for the release of Bell's 10th CD Tuesday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m. $5-$8. 643-2582.

Pete Yorn Comes to Town

Looking ahead a little bit, Pete Yorn's coming through Richmond Wednesday, Aug. 9, as part of a "You and Me" acoustic tour, taking the singer-songwriter first to Plan 9 Music in Carytown for an in-store at 5:30 p.m. and then to Alley Katz for a show starting whenever he gets there. Yorn's carved a place for himself in weird enough ways, through a tune in the Jim Carrey movie "Me, Myself & Irene" and a Buzzcocks cover in "Shrek 2." But it's all stuff that translates well to Yorn on a stage with a guitar, wherever that stage is. The Alley Katz show is $17-$20. 353-9996 or 643-2816. S
