Re: “Tag and Shoot

Oh Style Weekly, I'm so conflicted about this article. On one hand, as a graffiti enthusiast, artist and budding historian on the genre, I'm pleased to see a positive mention of graffiti in the press, but I also feel some pangs of jealousy that Keeley Laures is getting this recognition that suggests she is doing something wildly original. News Flash!! She's NOT the only documenter/blogger of Richmond graffiti, nor the only female. I do it too.

I may not have as many followers, and I haven't kept the blog content up in about 4 months, but that's only because I've been digging in my heels to compile hundreds of photos into a real catalog and take the time to find the connections between the writers, crews and write a legit, lengthy scholarly article (thesis) on the subject of Richmond Graffiti since the 1990s, not just the last 3 years. Never fear graffiti haters, YES, the forthcoming publication also addresses the illegal nature and consequences of the movement. And no, "Banksy would be embarrassed", I'm not a bandwagoner. I've been following graffiti since 1994 in the DC area and know all about Cool Disco Dan, et al. I'm glad you've taken the time to read the works of my colleage Roger Gastman.

It's great that Keeley likes taking photos and keeps her blog up, but is she really doing anything noteworthy for the sake of Graffiti? STYLE, I wish you would have done your homework a bit more and included some other graffiti documenter/archivists like myself or "BlackVomit" in the article, as it would have given it much more of a twist than the glorification of a young hipster's HOBBY.
