Re: “Are Politics Threatening an Open Educational Environment in Hanover?

Peter Galuszka and Style Weekly have done Hanover County a great service by placing the spotlight on this issue. Requests to the School Board to investigate the multiple of allegations of wrong doing have been denied by the Board. When the HSFOIL students asked for the Board to consider revison to the HCPS Policy on controversial material the Board remained silent. Now that is a lesson in bad civics for students!
So, it appears, the School Board bears responsibility for allowing this matter to remain unchallenged.
And there are other issues. A new $50 million courthouse while 75 year old elementary schools go without renovation (the BOS moved capital funds from the schools to build the new courthouse) (oh, yes, could there be a correlation between a downgraded education system and the need for more courtrooms?)...over $10 million drained from public education by the BOS over the past five years...over worked and underpaid teachers...it is a long list.
