Richmond Public Schools Students Stage Walkout

More than 200 high-school students gathered at City Hall on Monday to protest the conditions of city schools, saying news media reports including one from Style Weekly about rat infestations and funding issues shocked them into action.

Organized by a group of Open High students, about 150 of them walked out at 8:30 a.m. They made the trek downtown with a police escort, where they met students from other schools as well as a handful of parents.

While students said teachers received emails stating they would be fired if they joined in, many teachers packed snacks for them to take along.
