Richmond Garden Clubs Centennial Celebration
The celebration will take place on Tuesday, October 22 at 10:00am at The Low Line Green (located at the corner of 17th and Dock Streets, on the river side of the flood wall). The Low Line, 5.5 aesthetically and environmentally-friendly rehabilitated acres along the James River and the Kanawha Canal, is the latest collaborative project of the four Richmond garden clubs and its sister non-profit organization, Capital Trees. The Green is the project’s final phase and of particular historical significance because President Abraham Lincoln entered the city here on April 4th, 1865, after Union forces captured Richmond.
Several speakers and special guests will be in attendance including Mr. Michael Gorman from the U.S. State Parks Service, Jean Gilpin, Garden Club of Virginia President, and The Honorable Levar M. Stoney, Mayor of Richmond. Mayor Stoney will assist the four Richmond garden club presidents with the ceremonial planting of a Black Gum tree to commemorate the occasion.
