Rat Columns

Rat Columns has “Daydream Nation” on the brain. Started in Perth, Australia, by guitarist David West, the San Francisco-based trio may have the pop noise of Sonic Youth coursing through their new-wave veins, but they’re their own teenage riot. Their user-friendly offerings swirl, twirl and whirl with impulsive piquancy. Tunes such as “Walking Back,” “Fooling Around” and “Straight to Hell” — from their sophomore, full-length release, “Leaf” — wouldn’t sound out of place on a John Hughes soundtrack. Their bubbly, lovelorn ditties are spry and airy without being vacuous, like crushes about to reach fruition. Rat Columns plays Gallery5 on Thursday, Sept. 18. Richmond weirdo pop merchants Basmati and indie-fuzz pushers the Cales open. Doors open for the all-ages show at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. gallery5arts.org.
