Great article except for one thing. This sentence: "Fuming allowed the colors of the pipe to change as the instrument was heated and reheated." The color change caused by fuming has nothing to do with heat. The color change is actually caused by the thin layer of gold and silver interacting with the light. What you see when the pipe is still somewhat clear is referred to as the transmitting color, which means that light is passing through it. When the pipe gets dirty and light cannot pass through it then you see the reflecting color. You can also see these colors by shining a bright light on the fumed glass that causes a reflection.

You may have confused fuming and striking as striking is a process by which some silver based colors of glass are made to express different colors through heat.
