Prosecutors Defended

In "Safety Dance" (News & Features, Feb. 20) the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office is strongly criticized for its efforts, actions and contemplated actions in regard to public safety in and around Richmond nightclubs, specifically Club 534 and the Cotton Club.

Nothing could be further from the truth. The office has been a valuable and innovative partner in our efforts to ensure public safety at these and other locations. We have consistently worked together to find expedient and lasting solutions to crime and order maintenance problems.

We, the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, and other law enforcement and regulatory partners have and will continue to seek solutions to problems that include in their formation broad stakeholder and community participation, including the affected business owners or operators. These inclusive efforts have often resulted in successful resolution without protracted legal action. This approach is in the best interest of the entire community.

Assistant Chief of Police

Richmond Police Department
