PREVIEW: The Fourth Annual Afrikana Film Fest, Sept. 12-15

The film “Harriet,” about the legendary slave-turned abolitionist Harriet Tubman, was filmed in Richmond, Petersburg and other Central Virginia locations.

Thursday, Sept. 12: Opening night reception at the Valentine features snippets of the anticipated new film "Harriet," a major motion picture directed by Kasi Lemmons about slave-turned-abolitionist Harriet Tubman (Cynthia Erivo), as well as an Angry Black Female panel discussion. The film "Harriet" is not scheduled to be released in American theaters until Nov. 1, so this provides an early glimpse. 7 p.m.

Friday, Sept. 13: It's the Virginia premiere of the 2019 documentary "The Remix: Hip-Hop X Fashion," which examines the influence of creative women in the male-dominated hip-hop industry. There will be a post-screening conversation with celebrity stylist Misa Hylton, as well as co-directors Lisa Cortes and Farah X, designer April Walker and a guest to be announced. Location: Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University. 8 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 14: The matinee spotlight features "The Central Park Five" documentary from 2012 with exonerated member Raymond Santana in attendance for a post-screening discussion. This tragic story of injustice has gotten another look since the release of the Netflix series, "When They See Us." Location: Institute for Contemporary Art, 12:30 p.m. There will also be afternoon shorts and panel discussions in the Richmond arts district. Please see website below for coming details.
