PICK: Garden Club of Virginia’s Second Fall Symposium at Science Museum of Virginia

Tuesday, Sept. 25 and Wednesday, Sept. 26

Those with an interest in horticulture, floral design, conservation and restoration are in luck: You can join Garden Club of Virginia and other garden-enthusiasts for the lovely second Fall Symposium on Tuesday, Sept. 25 and Wednesday, Sept. 26 at a new venue: The Science Museum of Virginia.

According to a release, “dinner-plate sized dahlias and old-fashioned roses vie with the feathery textures of Russian sage and fall asters.”

“A flower show provides a wonderful chance to enhance arranging skills, learn about new plant materials for your garden and simply appreciate the beauty of nature’s bounty,” said Jean Gilpin, President of the Garden Club of Virginia, in a press release. “This year’s Fall Symposium is being held at an exciting new venue – the Science Museum of Virginia – and features a horticulture schedule with 73 classes including one for terrariums … Nearly 500 stems are expected to compete for ribbons.”

So celebrate the “elements of beauty” and go here for a complete rundown of events. Here’s more info from one of the organizers:

The programming kicks off with Flower Arranging School featuring Holly Heider Chapple, an innovative designer recently featured in The Washington Post. In addition, the Memphis-based team and authors of Florists to the Field are doing a lecture and demonstration, and Chip Callaway, who is leading a GCV trip to France next year, will discuss his experiences over the course of a 40-year career as a landscape architect.

Tickets to these programs as well as the Novice Flower Arranging Workshop are available through Friday, 9/21. Register now as there will be only a limited amount of walk-ins. Tuesday and Wednesday feature presentations open to GCV members and the public at no charge – Rethinking Conservation in the Garden, and The Legacy of Restoring Historic Gardens.

The highlight of the Symposium is a comprehensive Flower Show with horticulture, photography and floral design staged in the venue’s brand new Dewey Gottwald Center. It features 18 boutique vendors and a popup Bistro providing healthy food, a view of the Pollinator Garden and a wine bar, too. No need to pre-register for the horticulture.
