Interesting comment, Brenda, but there's certainly a case to be made for consistency in the laws regarding the keeping of animals. If dogs, cats, and even other birds can be purchased and owned, despite the potential for abuse that always exists, it seems a bit strange to exclude the keeping of chickens. It certainly isn't clear that there is any greater potential for mistreatment with a flock than with, say, a golden retriever.

At least among small-scale, backyard flocks, which leads to a central issue in all of this: however improperly they might be handled (and I'm only advocating informed and responsible ownership, for the record), a backyard hen is almost certainly given a far better existence than any of the layers or fryers are raised and slaughtered by the factory farming system, which produces most of the eggs and meat this country consumes. It might be said, even, that the raising of chickens at home is a small blow for animal rights, assuming that the egg-eating home-farmer buys that much less product from the industrial system.
