My Hero, Macy Gray

The 2002 film "Spider-Man" had a lot of great moments, but one of the most satisfying was the street festival, where Spidey bounces around on balloons and protects the populace from the Green Goblin. Macy Gray< (who composed "My Nutmeg Phantasy" for the film) is the one singing and prancing onstage — until the fighting starts anyway. Gray and Spider-Man have a lot in common. That soulful voice that has won her both a Grammy and multiplatinum sales ain't perfect. It carries a rasp somewhere deep down that, like Peter Parker's nerdiness, gives her character. Makes her a standout amongst those honey-voiced songbirds out there. She also has an alter ego: Natalie McIntyre from Canton, Ohio, who, when called to action by Elton John for an AIDS Foundation benefit concert, takes off her clothes and becomes Macy Gray, mistress of rhythm, protector of blues. She takes the stage at Kanawha Plaza, villains or not, for Fridays at Sunset, June 23, opening at 6:30 p.m. $20. Call (800) 594-TIXX or visit www.fridaysatsunset.com. S
