Mother's Hopes for Patrick Henry

I strongly object to the characterization of my “hopes” in the article about the Patrick Henry Charter School (“Unchartered Territory,” Cover Story, Oct. 29). The caption implying that my hopes are in conflict with the hopes of parents of poor and disadvantaged children does not reflect my feelings at all; furthermore, considering that the writer has never spoken to me, I cannot understand how he purports to know what it is that I hope.

For the record allow me to share what my hopes truly are:

Aú I hope that the integrated curriculum, engaging instructional methods, and progressive quarterly calendar enable every student to master the learning objectives and to fully comprehend not just the facts of the lesson but also the concepts.

• I hope that my sons will be chosen in the random lottery so they can experience the best elementary education available anywhere.

• I hope that children from all Richmond neighborhoods will seek admission to the school and create a truly diverse school community.

• I hope that teachers and students from other schools will take field trips to Patrick Henry and use the SOL content lesson plans developed by Patrick Henry teachers specifically for use in the outdoor classroom at Forest Hill Park.

• Finally, I hope that the volunteer rally Nov. 8 will bring in the hundreds of supporters needed to make these hopes a reality.

I sincerely thank you for your time and attention to my concerns. I would appreciate action on your part to make sure that my hopes and feelings are accurately portrayed to the community.
