Megabus Draws Mega Riders

More riders depart Richmond's Main Street Station by bus than by train. Way more.

Last year an average of 3,209 riders a month arrived and departed the station via Amtrak. But Megabus transported more than three times as many riders — an average of 10,500 a month, according to city officials.

Richmond spent $23 million renovating the station used by Amtrak. Megabus, a private operator that offers service from the station to points north, south and east, pays $10,000 a year to use the parking lot across the street for arrivals and departures. The city is in the process of renewing its agreement with the company, which established its Richmond stop in January 2011.

Buses may beat trains in the city center, but Henrico County's Staples Mill station remains Amtrak's busiest in the state, with 28,550 passengers a month. Because of its location on a major freight line, Staples Mill offers more extensive service than Main Street Station, which offers limited service between Washington and Newport News.

Air travel out of Richmond International Airport trumps all, clocking an average of 266,000 passengers a month in 2013.
