Friday, Oct. 29

Growing up in Philadelphia, Howard Beverly became so obsessed with music that by the age of 9 he was calling himself Frankie after hearing the doo-wop sound of Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. Dabbling in his own doo-wop vocal pursuits, Beverly eventually found his true niche in the urban R&B and soul of the early '70s. Together with his group, initially called Raw Soul, Beverly's quiet storm band caught the attention of one Marvin Gaye, who picked it as an opening act, landed it a record deal and picked a proper band name of Maze. Earning numerous gold records over its tenure, Maze has left an undeniable impact on the genre, and continues to draw devoted fans to its live shows. Sure to play hits such as “Joy and Pain,” “Workin' Together” and others, Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly is scheduled to perform at the Landmark Theater on Friday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. $43.50-$66.
