During the season of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, many followers of Jesus prepare for Easter by practicing a form of fasting or some other spiritual discipline. The day before Ash Wednesday is known as Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras ("Fat Tuesday" in French) and is traditionally observed by eating rich and fatty foods before 40 days of fasting in Lent.
