Re: “Is Monument Avenue Set in Stone?

And attempts to "contextualize" the monuments is a Road to Perdition. What shall we have in 100 years - 10 signs "contextualizing" the "contextualization"? All of these efforts are "memorializing" politicians attempting to tell people what to think, as though each viewer is too stupid to do their own history. Government needs to BUTT OUT. If individuals want to go pass out literature they care about, there's nothing to stop them (as long as they do not litter nor bully viewers who neither need nor want their guidance. Here's the truth - that unless and until we have men leading us that can invoke the affections of the people as the men already memorialized, then nothing shall be added - and most assuredly, none ought to be taken away. And whining about the genuine character and achievements of men greater than oneself is no way to make changes.

Re: “Confederate Chapel to Get Trippy Makeover During InLight

The VMFA is commemorating history with this DESECRATION of the Chapel. Chapels are Holy places (look up the Judeo-Christian definition, since it appears y'all need a refresher). It's unlikely, however, that their "Programme" for this abomination will list the sorts of "fine arts" they are portraying with these plans:
-- Turning Gen. Robert E. Lee's home into a cemetery for Union dead (fortunately, the valor of the men buried there trumps the intended insult).
-- Reconstruction, when carpetbaggers and scalawags perpetuated the horrors of war for another dozen years.
-- The "Pi$$ Christ" and Dung-Covered Madonna.
Oscar Wilde spoke and wrote of Art with a capital "A". This sort of "art" would simply be vulgar. As an Irish Nationalist, Wilde understood the Southern struggle (indeed, Jefferson Davis was the man Wilde most wanted to meet).
This is a MASSIVE FAIL on the part of the VMFA, in a long line if disrespectful acts and omissions. GOD BLESS THE FLAGGERS for Defending the Cause! as well as all those who built and donated for this land and building, who are spinning in their graves along with every person of faith. Of course, the latter is much of the point.
