Re: “A Hot Mess at CenterStage

It's not enough that, for YEARS, Style has been the home of increasingly bad spelling, awkward writing, POOR and "To the Highest Bidder" Journalism. Now, you cannot even review a musical event without making a WRECK of it. You people would not know good writing, let alone a true DIVA, if they BOTH blew up your collective noses.
First, check your price point for seats. The $250 you quoted was for premier seating in the concert and entrance to the Center Stage 2nd anniversary Gala prior, including open bar, hors d’oeuvres and dining options and after the performance, dancing at the post portion of the Gala. The most patrons paid for tickets to JUST the concert was $125 per person. Do the math, if you can, that's HALF of what Style claimed.
Second, and most importantly, Patti Labelle was FABULOUS on Saturday night. Looking better than she did even 15 years ago, thinner, vivacious and in GREAT voice, she was AMAZING. Any true Patti fan knows that she is always about sharing and CONNECTING thru shared life experiences, with her fans. She is one of those rare performers who STILL respects the fact that without US, she wouldn't be on stage. So, the woman is aging....we ALL are. So, she's 67, SO WHAT? Patti Labelle is a DIVA. SURE, there was lots of posing, primping, sashaying around the stage...AND talking. This is what her true fans expect... the theatrics of Patti Labelle, not just a jam-packed SONG COUNT !!! Patti has always been into audience participation... so pulling people on stage is nothing new... having them sing, do a little dance or even lip-synch... it's part of HER show. If you want just 90 minutes of non-stop song, well, you won't get THAT from anyone...and if you want that from Patti, stay home with her CDs. She mentioned her age, menopause, etc... no more than 3 times...I only remember 2 (and I was there)... Patti is diabetic and feels passionately about getting the word out. Sometimes, what we hear about a disease from a public figure, when they casually, in the course of their work, make THEIR personal journey a part of our perception....THAT can change lives. THAT can be MORE important than a concert full of songs....which, by the way, we ALL STILL GOT. As performers of the "old school" age, they ALL do a little song, a little dance, a little of this and that. Patti Labelle did more than a little of EVERYTHING, including bringing us into her confidence about her feelings on where we are in the world, fear, loneliness, loss and YES, AGING.
Third and last, Patti Labelle sang "You Are My Friend" as an encore, NOT "You've Got a Friend"...COME ON, you would have to have mistaken Carole King for Patti Labelle to make THAT mistake... I mean really, how LAME is Style Weekly? Strictly fish-wrap, with my apologies to all fish, everywhere.
