Re: “Food Review: The Spirit of Caliente Lives on at the New Sheppard Street Tavern

I keep noticing this error lately. "Crocodile tears" are not oversize tears, but rather insincere tears, stemming from an ancient idea that crocodiles wept for their victims while feeding (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crocodile_te…). That notion, familiar to many of us from Rudyard Kipling's story "The Elephant's Child", goes back at least to the 14th century, whereas the reference to great big tears goes back, as far as I know, to the past few months.

Re: “Food Review: Grandstaff and Stein Booksellers

I didn't realize they were letting children run restaurants and mix drinks these days. I'm surprised that no one on the staff discouraged these petulant outbursts.

A review is an opinion. That's the point. If every review were expected to be positive, it would be advertising and you would be expected to pay for it. This is constructive criticism (the reviewer explained specifically what the problems were, creating an opportunity for improvement). However, the response, largely by staff (who should know better), is destructive--of their own dignity and, sadly, of the restaurant's reputation. If I were the owner, someone would be getting fired. "Grand staff" you seem not to be, and I will now forever think of this as a place where someone might spit in my food if they don't like what they overhear at my table.

Re: “Field Work

Seriously. When you know where it's going to be, write an article then. "We don't know" is not news.

Re: “Charges Filed in Richmond Writer’s Death

Can we finally reopen the dialogue about bad driving? One of the ugliest things drivers do to pedestrians is to ease forward when pedestrians are only inches from their bumpers. When motorists perceive pedestrians not just as inferior, but as nuisances, things get dangerous.
