Re: “A Floating Protest Against the Atlantic Coast Pipeline Arrives in Richmond Sept. 8

Northan needs to wake up. He could lose this race on this issue. Many of us will still, begrudgingly, vote for him, despite his ignorance/obstinacy about the threat this pipeline poses to Virginia's drinking water, our tourism industry, and our basic democratic right not to have our property stolen. But we sure as hell won't campaign for him, and without our active support, who knows....

Re: “Bad Buzz: Dominion Substation Plan Upsets Organic Farmers in Varina

Contrary to the surprisingly aggressive comments here, Victory Farms is not alone in questing the wisdom of this placement for a new substation. Aside from the concerns of neighbors (decreasing property value, noise, etc.) are those regarding the precedent of permitting industrial land use along an Existing Character Protection Area (as designated by the County's 2026 Comprehensive Plan), in the historic Route 5 Corridor. This proposed substation would be visible from Osborne Turnpike (the trees only provide a partial screen, and then only when the leaves are out). This undermines ongoing efforts - including financial investments - to grow the region's tourism industry. As for the suggestion that if you use electricity you should be okay with having a substation next to your house, that's silly. This conversation isn't about whether or not to have a substation in Varina, but whether or not this is the wisest place to build it. There are lots of valid reasons why it should be elsewhere, and it is the duty of responsible members of any democracy to examine these choices.
