Re: “Architecture Review: The Maggie Walker Monument Proposals Need Significant Reconsideration

Why do so many assume the lovely live oak should be cut down? It is so well behaved with no large branches hanging down and in the way.No one mentions it is an evergreen and does not shed its leaves, creates very little maintenance, is established so it will not need watering or weeding. It also creates much needed shade for the area. Leaving the tree will save money and future costs. The above proposed design for the memorial staue has rows and rows of little plants and flowers, why complicate the park with these plantings which are hard and expensive to maintain. Also the live oak is a native tree which is rare in our area. I'm sorry that this tree has caused such hard feelings and the tree proponents are considered elitist, but it is truly an unusual and magnificent tree. It takes many years for a live oak to achieve this size in our area so IT JUST KILLS ME TO THINK ABOUT CUTTING IT DOWN.
