Re: “Show Us Your School

Please don't try to talk about what is (and isn't) going on in our classrooms if you have never experienced being a teacher. Just try getting kids to actively learn about the attributes of polygons when they don't know if they are getting fed dinner that night. Try teaching them test-taking strategies while they are thinking about the violence and lack of safety they experience at home.

We teachers need to have the resources (mostly the time and freedom) to help this children handle their personal issues before they can ever think about being open to learn. This isn't about blaming anyone for anything, we just need to have the ability to approach the situations our students are dealing with before we can truly nurture their love and desire to learn. We can't really do that because we are strapped tightly to the "standards of learning" on a daily basis.

As for all of the test scores you posted...yeah. Just put yourself in the perspective of some of these kids and you'll understand why they don't have an overwhelming desire to pass one measly test. Chances are, their parents didn't do well in school. Quite possibly grandparents. And siblings, too. They are exposed to a lack of care and ability to do well in school from day one. It's not just a coincidence.

It's the environment that needs kindling. These are the issues that keep inner-city schools bogged down. I'm not saying there aren't teachers who don't do well, because there are some (just like any job has some slackers).

This goes full circle, though. We need for RPS to be safe and clean so our students can have somewhere that they will feel comfortable and ready to learn when the time is right. As of now, those conditions are far from present. Let's give our children the love, care, and attention they deserve. This has gone on too long.
