LETTER: Unequal Behavior in Classrooms

Terone Green takes the Henrico School Board to task for the suspension rate of black students and the report which reveals that 17 Henrico County public schools were recently denied full accreditation, all but one being located in the majority black eastern districts of the county.

He claims the playing field is not level and the system is broken. Really! Does Mr. Green think that black children in the East End are being denied the benefits that his children in the West End are receiving? I am sure the eastern part of the county has hard-working teachers just like the western. I actually know some of them. It just so happens that most of the suspensions for black students come from five schools: Highland Springs High School, Henrico High School, Wilder Middle School, John Rolfe Middle School and Fairfield Middle School. Guess what? They have majority black student populations.

In a March report for Henrico County Schools, it was also found that 0.2 percent of students suspended made up 31 percent of habitual offenders.

Mr. Green also claims the board is not diverse enough with two white men, two white women and one black man. What he really means is it has too many white people. He challenges the board to reach outside their districts and help. That is not a bad idea; however, he needs to stop playing the race card and making people victims. Parents need to step up and students need to take responsibility for their disruptive behavior regardless of race. It would also help if Mr. Green would step outside of Short Pump, if he has not already done so, and see the challenges that East End schools face on a daily basis from students.
