Re: “Inside Baseball

The 9th inning ended on February 24, and the Mayor’s plan failed to score. The Shockoe Bottom ballpark needed big innings in the 4th, 5th and 6th, but whiffed at the hanging questions. So now we’re in extra innings, and we need new questions. Here’s one for the 10th: Which new ballpark location gives the Flying Squirrels the best chance for success, measured by attendance? The risk of diminished attendance at the Shockoe Bottom location is too great for various reasons. If attendance fails there, pro baseball in the City of Richmond dies. The Boulevard location has successfully drawn a large regional fan base for decades. The new ballpark decision is about baseball, and the Boulevard location is a proven winner for baseball.

Re: “Ballpark Proposal Poised for Vote — And Another Month of Debate

With the Mayor refusing to cooperate with the counties, have the Squirrels been waiting for the City to make up its mind about the location of the ballpark? The ballclub added minority owners the week before last, and the new guys have ties to the counties, not the City. It looks like they are preparing to help the Squirrels build a new ballpark within a new development, maybe on land just west of Short Pump owned by Henrico County. They might be taking a City-based corporate headquarters to the development also. (Henrico may have no money for a ballpark, but they still have some undeveloped real estate.)
