Re: “Punk Rock Bernie Sanders Mural Goes Up on Broad Street

MARCOS ALVES, Well said, my friend. And I couldn't agree more in all respects. I have often made the same observation about health insurance "death panels." Most of this country's insured apparently believe their premium entitles them to unlimited medical resources, including a full-range of cancer treatments and organ transplants. I remain flummoxed that so many who fear their government's reach unwarily expect corporate bodies to safeguard their interests and options. As for the uninsured, the prevailing attitude seems to be "Fuck them." It's the dominance of our "capitocracy" that fucks us all, not our government. In any event, as you indicated, we have recourse to any nefarious governmental policy but none with regard to corporations.

Like it or not (unless one wants to buy an island and fend for oneself) living in a "state" necessitates being part of a social contract. This does not require valuing the "collective" over the individual; it does, however, entail mutuality, reciprocity, and interdependence. These are a few of the significant punk qualities and experiences I have cherished for some 30 years. The American Dream formerly obliged its participants to meet certain social responsibilities. Unfortunately, today's vision of freedom has devolved into stark and rapacious independence and acquisition. There is nothing "punk" about this stance. In opposition to the Ayn Rand-style conservatism especially exemplified by the Republican Party, Sanders expects all those who have benefited from the social contract to contribute their fair share to its promulgation--"Each according to ability; and each according to need." Even aside from party affiliation, personal politics, or social identity, this is the kind of world I want to live in, and I hope my country will come to manifest it. With Sanders at its helm, we have a chance.
