Re: “Richmond Is Now An Asthma Capital and Doctors Say Schools Are Part of the Problem

The Children's Hospital of Richmond Foundation is sponsoring a new program called YoU CAN Control Asthma Now (UCAN). The program is based in the Pediatric Pulmonary clinic at VCUHS. The focus of this program is to address the disparity in Asthma treatment outcomes for the City of Richmond, with plans to expand into the surrounding areas. I work with a social worker, and together we meet with families to provide Asthma education and assess socio-economic barriers that may be a hindrance to children living with asthma. We hope to collaborate with the schools in improving Asthma care for Richmond students as the program continues to develop. Dr. Robin Everhart, at VCU, was recently awarded an NIH planning grant: A Community-Engaged Approach to Reducing Pediatric Asthma Disparities in Richmond. With community involvement and best care practices we can be well on our way to losing the notorious distinction of being the United States Asthma Capital.
