I have always thought that Richmond's place in the history of not only this state, but in the history of this country was so important. And the writer is correct about the integrated society that we had, pre-civil war. I was doing some research on Jackson Ward and Church Hill, and I remember thinking then how different things were, and wondering if any one else had noticed that about Richmond. What the writer said is true, blacks and whites lived in the same neighborhoods, worked together and did the things we do today. Of course the wealthy, rich Richmonders, just like today, didn't associate much with the working class, so that is nothing new.
