Re: “Parents of Slain Roanoke Reporter Attend State Senate Candidate Forum

PackFan - I give up. You are either not reading what I write or you cannot comprehend. I'm not advocating taking away any responsible gun owner's gun. But you continue to circle that drain.

Try talking to people who have found themselves in the scenarios that you imagine. You might learn a thing or two about how they actually go down.

Good day Sir.

Re: “Parents of Slain Roanoke Reporter Attend State Senate Candidate Forum

Packfan - Let me tell you a story about a problem in my neighborhood. There is a 4-way stop sign at an intersection . One stretch of road approaching the stop signs is long and downhill. Drivers, both adults and teenagers, are speeding, often, not even stopping. We've already had two dogs killed in separate events and they were on leashes. Our neighborhood Facebook page is filled with understandable anger and concern. Ideas on how to solve this problem are being discussed and mulled over.

Now imagine if one of the neighbors spoke up and said that his child had been hit by a car and while it wasn't the exact same scenario, he offered his advice that something must be done because he wanted no other parent to face the difficulties his family had endured.

Would you turn to that person and say, "With all due respect, your child wasn't hit by the car in exactly the same scenario so your advice means little"?

I certainly hope you would not. Andy & Barbara know that background checks would not have stopped Alison's shooter. But what if we had a gun violence restraining order (GVRO) in place and a public awareness campaign had been launched with this new law? He was clearly decompensating. His family could have petitioned the courts to have his firearms removed. We will never know because "A" rated Senators in the Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee listened to the NRA lobbyist and tabled the bill. They did so despite testimony from gun violence survivors, families of victims, medical experts, and VA State Police. I know this because I was there.

And to your point about "gun-free" zones. Umquaa wasn't gun-free. Neither was Columbine. And the countless mass shootings we have every week in this country in domestic violence situations where whole families are massacred? Not. Gun. Free. Chris Kyle? Nope. He was armed.

So forgive me if I hear your arguments as just more tired rhetoric that I hear every single day in my line of work from NRA and VCDL lobbyists. Your way of thinking lines right up with theirs, word for word.

Finally, I didn't say I didn't like guns. I don't like gun violence. BIG difference. I grew up with guns. My Dad is a Korean War Vet and a CCP holder. My family hunts. My husband's family owned Peters Cartridge Company before selling it to Remington. I just happen to think we can protect the 2nd amendment and still keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them.

MJ - Do tell what liberties you would be giving up by our country adopting Universal Background Checks? Or having a Gun Violence Restraining Order whereby family members of the dangerously mentally ill could petition the court for help, i.e. the Smith Mountain Lake murders or the La Isla Vista shootings? How does it effect you for VA to implement laws that would separate a convicted DV abuser from his firearms? Laws like this could have saved the Palmer family from Glade Springs or the Rodgers family from Chesterfield.

Unless you are a criminal or dangerously mentally ill, your liberties shall remain intact.

And no, I didn't expect Glen Sturtevant to confront them. I expected him to be a human being and introduce himself, look them in the eye and tell them he was sorry for their pain.

And while you may find it shameful for us to continue to work on this issue and bring it out into the light, we say it's too late.

PackFan - Ask the Chief of Police in Chicago where guns come from and they will tell you from outside of Chicago. As long as we have lax gun laws in states like VA, we will have a serious gun trafficking problem.

Your comment is lifted straight out of the NRA & VCDL playbook. Try doing some independent thinking for once.

We don't need an NRA "A" rated legislator like Glen Sturtevant at the state house. We already have plenty of those.

I've asked Mr. Sturtevant to release his answers to the NRA survey that earned him an "A" rating and he refused. The NRA liked his answers so much that they are independently spending over $55,000 to help get him elected.

I was there that night and know the Parkers personally. Glen was aware that they were there and didn't even have the decency to come over and acknowledge them. To me, that is very telling. What happened to Alison Parker and Adam Ward affected every single person living here in the state of VA. Our hearts were collectively broken. He is running for STATE OFFICE. His dismissiveness to the Parkers was very telling.

Re: “Richmond Is Now An Asthma Capital and Doctors Say Schools Are Part of the Problem

I completely agree with Susan Ahern. It is perfectly logical to look at the school board and the way it votes on a budget and draw the conclusion that Glen Sturtevant certainly did not want to help repair the infrastructure of the schools or, for that matter, any improvements to the city schools. Fortunately, the other school board members did not agree with him.

It's important to look at this man's record with the job he has done before deciding whether or not we want him as a state senator.
