Re: “Officers, Not Professors, Should Be the Ones with Guns

Picture this: A college professor, after her last class for the evening, is walking back to her vehicle to drive home. While she did park her vehicle under the lightpost earlier in the day, she now sees that the lights in the area are out. Campus police are not available to escort her to her vehicle, so she is walking alone, in a dark parking lot.

She is, quite frankly, a sitting duck. She could be mugged, raped, murdered... and no one would be able to get there quickly enough to prevent it. As per the college rules (and lack of state law preventing them), her firearm is safely locked in her car - where it will do her absolutely no good as a defensive tool.

While I realize that the idea of professors having firearms in class is distasteful for many folks, please consider that perhaps the primary need for the tool is not in the classroom, but before and after class time, in dark parking lots and shadowy walkways, and by disallowing possession of defensive tools, the college is increasing the risk level.
