Re: “In Historic Fan District, Future Comes Calling with Modern Row Houses

As a developer in the historic neighborhoods of Richmond I walk a tight rope of balancing community and city politics at the same time satisfying my customers. There are too many examples of modern architecture disguised as historic. Just as classical architecture inspired Italianate and Victorian, modernism is another out growth from historic. I applaud the architect and developer for trying to differentiate their project while remaining contemporary.

Re: “Lost in the Valley

It's about time a critical mass of people were fused into Shockoe Bottom. I'm glad the current residents appreciate the character of the neighborhood and expect more from it. Love for a neighborhood creates a sense of community. It will be interesting to see how Shockoe and Church Hill merge closer together in the coming years. That will be the key to each neighborhoods success. Too often we have historical amnesia about an area. Now is the time for Shockoe Bottom. And BTW not all the development has been commercial or multi-family. There are several new projects and historic single family structures in the area. I'm of the opinion as Shockoe goes so does the rest of downtown; that includes the Slip. I agree that more attention and care should be paid to the area by our city "fathers," residents, entertainment seekers, business owners and private developers. Co-operation/participation and not exclusion and gerrymandering will ultimately determine the fate of The Bottom and Richmond at-large. I enjoyed the article.
